NABC ELECTS OFFICERS AND PLANS FIRST NATIONAL GAY/LESBIAN BUSINESS CONVENTION

The National Association of Business Councils, the nationwide gay and lesbian chamber of commerce, held its first anniversary board meeting in New York City recently to elect officers for the coming year and plan its first national convention.

Jean O'Leary of Los Angeles, former cochair of the National Gay Task Force and currently executive director of Gay Rights Advocates, succeeded to the presidency of the NABC. Newly elected officers are: President-Elect Arthur S. Lazers, C.P.A., former president of the Golden Gate Business Association of San Francisco and recently elected as the first openly gay trustee of the United Way of the Bay Area. Vice-President Werner Paul Kuhn, Esq., co-chair of the Hudson-Mohawk Business and Professional Association, Albany, New York.

On May 5th, Philip Fortheringham, a gay man with dual British-Canadian nationality, was refused entry to the U.S. at JFK International Airport in NYC. Fortheringham was stopped by Immigration officials who searched his luggage and read his diary

which contained information suggesting he was a homosexual. Fortheringham was questioned as to his homosexuality and was then informed that he would not be adImitted to the U.S. because he was a homosexual. He was told that he could request a hearing before an immigration judge, but that he would probably lose that hearing and be deported forever. Based on this inaccurate information, he did not request a hearing and agreed to leave the U.S..

On his way to the boarding gate, while in the custody of TWA officials, Fortheringham decided that he wanted to return to INS and request a hearing. He informed the TWA manager that he did not want to board the plane and asked to return to INS. The TWA manager refused to comply with this request and informed him that he would be put on the plane, if necessary by airport security. Fortheringham was then excorted onto the plane and returned to London. It must be noted that Philip had not been deported and had no deportation papers, but was leaving the U.S. of his own accord.

On July 16th, Fortheringham returned to JFK traveling on his Canadian passport. He was admitted to the U.S. without any problems despite the fact that he was Continued on page 26
